Randonee racer Bryan Wickenhauser reports on the first Five Peaks ski mountaineering race in the Ten Mile Range above Breckenridge—a monster course that gained 10,000 vertical feet. Thirty-five teams of two braved the challenge on April 10; see the Five Peaks website for full results and links to photos. Here’s Wick’s report:

Tyndall Gorge has long been a favorite destination in Rocky Mountain National Park for high-quality backcountry skiing, ice testpieces such as the Squid, abundant bouldering, and classic big-wall cragging on Hallett’s north buttress. Easily accessed from the Bear Lake parking lot, the Tyndall is truly a mountain playground for all [...]
Hull Cook worked as a climbing guide at the Boulderfield Shelter Cabin, at 12,750 feet on Longs Peak, during the summers of 1932, 1933, and 1934. These are his stories.
Everyone at Boulderfield felt a serious responsibility toward all persons who came up trail, although we were in no way required to do so. [...]
With big storms blanketing the high peaks in early May, the last 10 days have seen several remarkable descents on Colorado 14ers:
• On May 9, Jarrett Luttrell climbed and snowboarded Capitol Peak, making the probable first snowboard descent, via the Secret Chute line on the east face. With him was Brittany Walker, who proceeded to [...]

Initial reports indicated that La Sportiva—the Italian maker of boots and shoes whose North American HQ is in Boulder—had a new approach rig called the Gandalf, presumably named after the king-honch sorcerer in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. By the time I spied a look at ’em, they’d been renamed [...]

So good to be back at Dove Valley this morning for the start of Denver Broncos Training Camp. It was hot, I got fried, but I don’t care! I had a blast trying to spot John Fox on the field just so I could analyze his coaching style. I had a blast watching all the [...]
Denver Broncos Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway joined ESPN for an interview from the 22nd Annual American Century Celebrity Golf Championship. Why he went with defensive minded John Fox… We’ve struggled in Denver on the defensive side for several years, and so, we really wanted to start anchoring that defense again. What [...]
Congratulations to newlyweds Robert & Brandi Ayers. The Denver Broncos defensive end was married yesterday and the new couple was kind enough to share their special day with Broncos Country. Brandi + Robert Ayers: Same Day Edit from Nick Weeks :: Snaplife Studios on Vimeo. Looks like two good families coming together!
When things get bad for the Colorado Rockies, they really get bad. Charlie Blackmon fractured his left foot against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday. Blackmon reached base on a single before advancing to third on Jonathan Herrera’s hit-and-run single to left. Blackmon appeared to stumble slightly while rounding second base before his left foot hit [...]
I know we’re all getting a little bored and anxious with the NFL lockout situation. In fact one of my favorite things about the NFL is watching all of the off-season movement and activity. Free agency, the draft, and mini-camps. This year all we got was the draft and even that was different this go [...]
Ian Stewart left a Colorado Springs Sky Sox game early on Tuesday and he’s on his way to Atlanta to join the Colorado Rockies. With injuries to Troy Tulowitzki (right quadriceps tightness) and Carlos Gonzalez (bruised right wrist), Stewart was brought in to protect a suddenly depleted Rockies bench. Stewart started the season as the [...]
The Colorado Avalanche acquired goaltender Semyon Varlamov from the Washington Capitals in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2012 Entry Draft and a conditional second-round choice in either 2012 or 2013. Varlamov was drafted by the Capitals in the 1st round (23rd overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. In 3 seasons he appeared [...]
The Colorado Avalanche signed Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Jan Hejda to a 4 year deal today. Hejda, was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the 4th round (106th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He broke into the league in 2006 with the Edmonton Oilers, and then signed as a free agent by Columbus [...]
According to TheRecord.com, the Kitchener Rangers were set to drop Colorado Avalanche #2 overall draft pick Gabriel Landeskog today. Rangers coach and general manager Steve Spott had to dump the 18-year-old from the roster by Tuesday’s 11 a.m. deadline. Which will enable the team to take another player in Wednesday’s Canadian Hockey League import draft. [...]

Fatalities on the peak were depressing, even though they were beyond our realm of responsibility. One day some frightened youths rushed into the cabin [...]

One time that I carried someone down the mountain remains vivid in my memory; it was more prolonged [than usual] yet not severely fatiguing because love [...]
